Newsletter February 20th 2013

Dear Members,

There are only 34 Rules of Golf as approved by the R&A but that is only the
beginning of the story. The Book of Decisions on these Rules seems to me to be
similar in volume to the Bible, which probably explains why these simple Rules
generate so much controversy from time to time. Accordingly, the Committee is
delighted to announce that we are having a Rules Night in Tulfarris on Wednesday
13 March at 7.30 p.m. Our PGA Golf Professional Thomas O'Neill will be there to
guide us through the "minefield" and hopefully we can all come away a little bit
better informed. It will also give us an opportunity to meet up in a more social
setting than the usual "cauldron" of the weekend competition!

Last year our Juniors hosted an interclub match with our neighbours from Baltinglass
and last Friday, 15 February, six of our Juniors travelled to Baltinglass for
the return match. Brian Bonfield, Ciaran Lambe, Niall Callanan, Shane Kelly,
Ciaran Corrigan and Liam Callanan represented Tulfarris with distinction and
lost the match by fairly narrow margins. Captain Noel A Kelly tells me that they
all put up a good performance on the day. Well done lads.

On Saturday 16 February Tulfarris had our second outing in the 2013 Garden County
Trophy competition against Lisheen Springs Golf Club. The Tulfarris pairs were
James McCarron and Eoin Curley, Ciaran Curley and Joe McConville, Liam
O'Loughlin and Pearse Daly, Noel A Kelly and Niall Robinson, Brendan Daly and
John Curley and Stephen Cullen and Sheamus McGrath. After some good wins at home
and some closely fought matches away honours were even with 3 wins each. Well
done to everyone involved.

Tulfarris now has one more match to play in this "mini-league"
Western Section of the competition - against Coolattin on Saturday 2 March. At
this stage only two teams can win the league and go on to the final against the
winners of the Eastern Section, Lisheen Springs who are on 11.5 points or
Tulfarris currently on 6.5 points. So it would seem that we will have to win 5.5
points from the six available in our match with Coollattin. This will be a tall
order but the Panel seem to be up for the challenge. I am sure you will join me
in wishing them well on the day.

Entry Sheets for other Interclub competitions have been posted on the Notice Board in
the Golf Shop. These cover a wide range of handicaps and if you are interested
in being considered for inclusion on one or more of the Panels be sure to get
your name down as soon as possible.

When you are at the Notice Board you could also get your name down for the Singles
and Doubles Club Matchplay competitions for 2013. The draws will be made on 19
March so be sure to get your names down not later than Monday 18 March. The
entry fees for these competitions are included already in your annual Club
levies so no additional payment is required.

The Club's Conditions of Play have been posted on the Notice Board also. The
Committee has asked me to draw Members attention in particular to the
requirement to "sign-in" before commencing your round. The computer system
sign-in times will be restricted from now on to reflect that requirement

Saturday/Sunday 2 and 3 March - Weekend Competition - Back to

Sunday 10 March 2013 - Captains Drive-In - Scramble with Shotgun Start - entry fee

GUI Leinster Branch is in the process of carrying out a strategic review with
the aim of producing a Strategic Plan to cover the next three to five years.
They would like the process to be as inclusive as possible and to give Members
the opportunity to contribute to the development of the strategy. They have
initiated an on-line survey and have assured us that each Members response will
remain anonymous and that the data will be processed by an independent

They expect the survey to take just a few minutes to complete and on
completion you will be entered into a draw for an overnight stay for two people
at Carton House Hotel and golf on either of the Championship golf courses.
Please click here to complete the survey

Your participation will be very much appreciated by Leinster Golf.
