August 10th Newsletter

Dear Members,

Some dates for your calendar in the next two weeks:

President John Hyland’s Prize 2018 – Sunday 19th August

Maybe you came close two weeks ago and are chomping at the bit for another chance to bring home a major or maybe you didn’t quite fire on the day, well it’s almost time for the next big one! President John Hyland’s prize will take place on Sunday 19th August.

Based on the number of members who took part in the captains prize last month, it won’t be possible to accommodate a shotgun start for this event. Instead the President’s Prize will be based on a time sheet format similar to that of day 1 of the captain’s prize

The BRS booking system goes live on Saturday 11th August at 8am in 1 hour time slots. For example, if you would like to go out between 8am and 9am then put your name within that block. If you need an early or a later tee time within that block, please let the Honorary Secretary know in advance of the draw for partners on Friday night and we will do our best to accommodate all requests.  (Random draw within each hour block)

Deadline for entry is 4pm on Friday 17th August

Members are advised to check their actual pairings and tee times via BRS on Saturday 18th August. The entry fee for the competition is €5 payable to the starter on Day 1.

Sign in will be done in the Gate Lodge Golf Shop with the starter and on the computer as normal. When you have finished your round, please ensure your card is fully completed, signed and entered on the computer and dropped in the score box.. A leader board of the top scorers will then be drawn up and will be in the pro-shop to view.

Eligibility and Format

·         To be eligible to win first prize, a person must have been a member of Tulfarris Golf Club in at least 1 of the 3 preceding years and must have played three 18 hole qualifying competitions in the current calendar year.

·         New Ordinary members in the current year & Youths can win all prizes in the President’s prize with the exception of 1st Prize.

·         For information please review the conditions of play document here

Due to the timesheet format a meal won’t be planned for the same day as the event and the presentation of prizes will take place at a later date on the evening of the final Summer Social Scramble on Wednesday 22nd August.  (We hope as many members as possible can join us for the presentation and scramble that evening)

Best of luck to everyone taking part

Pink Day – (August Monthly Medal – Sponsor by Comfort Air Conditioning Services)

Captain Mags and the Ladies Club are planning Pink Day this Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with the monthly medal and in aid of Breast Cancer research.  They are hoping to get as many ladies playing in pink as possible and we’ve assured her that the Mens Club will support this worthy cause also. It would be great if you could drag out any pink items of clothing lurking in your wardrobes (doesn’t have to be your wardrobe;) to wear when playing in the medal this weekend.  It would also be appreciated if you can take photos of your groups in pink gear so we can put a collage together to hang in the Proshop. There will be a small donations box there also if members would like to throw a few bob in an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and support research.

Donadea Trophy

Report from Team Manager John Horan

Last year a Mixed team from Tulfarris brought home the Runners Up Pennant and Medals from the prestigious Donadea Trophy Interclub competition played at Knockanally Golf Club.

This Invitational golf team tournament is played annually on a Scotch Foursomes basis and 2017 was the first time that Tulfarris participated. Tulfarris was represented by Mary and John Curley, Rosaleen Prescott and Noel Reilly, Miriam and Gerry Solan and Ann and John Horan.

This year the same team went one spot better and on 17 July they brought home the Trophy and Pennant to Tulfarris. Interclub competitions are notoriously difficult to win and this one involving 17 teams - over a certain vintage - is always keenly contested. Excitement levels at the prize presentation were high and Tulfarris team members relished their success with Newbridge close Runners Up.

Captain Shemus Dore and Lady Mags Ryan both sent their congratulations to the team on this Interclub competition success.

Provincial Towns Update:

Unfortunately our great run in this year’s competition came to an end in the semi-final when we were defeated 6-3 by last year’s winners Enniscorthy GC.

Although it was a fairly comprehensive defeat on paper we at one stage were up in 5 matches and all square in another two but in the end we succumbed to a decent team.

Away from home Paddy Carty had a ding dong battle with his opponent but went down on the 18th Hole. The other four matches were also very tight and although up early in a couple of them we lost all late on.

At home we shared the spoils 2-2 with some great golf on view from both sides with Sean O’Rourke and Lenny Murphy winning yet again.

On behalf of the management team I would like to thank each and everyone on the panel for their time and patience over the past 3 months as we progressed through the competition and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

We would also like to acknowledge the support received from our members who gave up their time to caddy, practice and other duties on match days notably Brendan Daly, John Curley, Pat Curley, Captain Shemus Dore, John Field, Paul Fitzpatrick, and John Horan and also to the numerous members who acted as ‘’spotters’’ during the matches.

Semi Final Panel as follows,

Jay Curley, Myles Burke, Niall Robinson, Lenny Murphy, Pearse Daly, Paddy Carty, Paul Reid, Paul Finnerty, James McCarron, Paul Murphy, Sean O’Rourke, Tom O’Rourke, & Eoin Curley.

Denis Mahon & Tom O’Rourke
