Scratch Cups - June Bank Holiday Opens:

As mentioned last month, the Golf Club & Resort are partnering this year to host both Junior and Intermediate Scratch Cups this coming Saturday & Sunday.

Format is as follows:

Blue Markers – Strokes: Junior SC (handicaps 4-10) & Intermediate SC (handicaps 11-18). Winner of each cup will also win a place in the 2018 PGA Challenge Pro Am. Prizes in both competitions also for the best nett score. To ensure we have something for everybody there will be a separate stableford competition held for the Ladies and also a separate blue stableford competition held for gents with handicaps 19+.

Please note the traditional blue tee boxes on 9th and 16th holes will not be in play for the cups. In addition, a one-off Drop Zone will be created just short of the 18th fairway for players who do not successfully make it across the lake from the Blue tee. If you are unable to locate your ball after your tee shot on this hole you can proceed to play your third shot from this Drop Zone.

For all above events entry for members is 10 euro and visitors 25 euro. BRS booking system is now open.

To round off the June Bank Holiday weekend we will be holding a Greens 4BBB event (any combination) on Monday 4th June. Members 10 euro Visitors 20 euro.

There are plenty of tee times still available so hopefully we have a great turnout from the membership and would encourage you to invite friends, family and colleagues to enjoy our course.

Match Play Round-2 Deadline:

The deadline to complete your second round singles and doubles is Sunday 10th June as per earlier communications. Rules & Conditions around the club matchplays are noted on https://www.tulfarrisgolfclub.com/match-play/

ANZCO June Monthly Medal:

Due to the significant interclub activity occurring on the weekend of the 9th/10th June, the committee have decided to extend the medal to 3 days inclusive of Monday 11th June. For the June Medal only, tee off times are permitted to 5pm Saturday through Monday.

Shemus Dore ‘Snarling Beast’:

On the 16th & 17th of June not only will the considerable challenge of the course itself be presented but the Captain will also be choosing some of the deadliest pins that can be found. It is intended to be a fun stableford event but to ease the pain, outside of the regular competition prizes, there will be a small prize for all members who tame the beast and bring in 36 points or more.

Sigma Wireless Birdie King & ATR group Golfer Of The Year Trophy:

Both events are now up and running and updates through the season can be viewed on https://www.tulfarrisgolfclub.com/birdie-king/ & https://www.tulfarrisgolfclub.com/golfer-of-the-year/

Results of Inter-club matches:

Pierce Purcell

The Pierce Purcell qualification was in Newbridge Golf Club on the 12th of May. Tulfarris went down with a strong team, played some really good golf but unfortunately on the day it didn't go our way.

The team that represented Tulfarris were:

Chris Shelley & Brian Nolan

Paddy Carthy & Arran Kehoe

Kevin McDonald & Ian Murphy

Robbie Nagle & Peter Pedersen

Alan Britton & Tom Browne

A big thank you to the players and subs involved.

Rnd 2 Tulfarris GC 7 , Baltinglass GC 2

After receiving a bye through to the 2nd round of this year’s competition we were drawn to play local rivals Baltinglass GC on Saturday 5th May. Following a trial match against Naas GC where we had a large turnout of approx 20 members playing on the day we eventually agreed on a team of 9 players which in itself was a very difficult choice with the level of interest received. At home on Saturday we got off to a great start in 3 of the 4 matches establishing substantial early leads which our lads duly extended and won handsomely. The final match was ‘’nip and tuck’’ all the way and was still very much alive when called in on the 18th hole. Over in Baltinglass GC it was the opposite as early on we were down one hole in 4 of the 5 matches but gradually the guys got to grips with the tricky greens and proceeded to turn most of the matches around which resulted in Tulfarris claiming 3.5 pts out of the 5 available away from home.

Team on the day was as follows,

Home: Paddy Carthy, Lenny Murphy, Paul Reid, & Eoin Curley

Away: James McCarron, Paul Murphy, Pearse Daly, Paul Finnerty, Gavin Buckley.

Special thanks to Tom O’Rourke for all his assistance and also the entire panel for their commitment.

Also special mention to Brendan Daly & John Field for their help with practice and caddying...

Rnd 3 Tulfarris GC 5, Athy GC 4

Following on from our superb win over near neighbours Baltinglass we were drawn to face Athy who had already recorded good wins in previous rounds over Carlow & The Heritage. Again we were on the wrong side of the draw with 5 matches away and 4 at home and after numerous practice sessions down in Athy we decided to make a couple of changes from our last win. The wind on the day made conditions very tricky and away from home we lost out in one match on the 18th and another 2 matches on the 17th with Paul Murphy gaining an important win on the 18th.

At home some of our matches went behind but the lads showed gritted determination to claw their way back from 2 & 3 down early to eventually win on the 17th & 18threspectively. Our first match out had a commanding lead at one stage but Athy showed character to hit back with a couple of birdies to bring it up the 18th but we eventually claimed the win.

This all lead to the nail biting finish with the last match featuring Sean O’Rourke playing in his first Inter club singles match for the club one down playing the 17th but he showed great resolve to level the match and when the 18th was halved we headed down the 19th. Sean after finding the bunker with his drive showed great composure to lay up to his ‘’preferred yardage’’ which put all the pressure back on the opposition and after hitting the lip out of the bunker they found water with their 3rd shot, Sean had to finish the job and he duly did so by hitting the middle of the green and 2 putting to seal a hard fought win for the team.

In the quarter final we will play the winners of Blainroe GC and Wicklow GC.

Many thanks to the entire panel for their time and patience as we had to rearrange this match at a late stage and playing on a Friday wasn’t ideal.

Also many thanks to Brendan Daly & John Field for their assistance with practice and caddying duties over the two matches and Tom O’Neill for his valued opinions.

Barton Cup

We met Baltinglass on Bank Holiday Mon 7th May, with Tulfarris having home advantage -3 matches at home and the 2 away matches playing the old 9 twice in Baltinglass.

With high hopes of repeating our 1st round away wins, unfortunately the results did not go our way in Baltinglass, with the final match of the day going down to the 17th and Conor Fallon and Fergal Quinn on the wrong end of a ding dong match, played in great spirit. The pairing of father and son John & Eoin Curley (which I believe to be a first in the clubs inter-club history), were also defeated on the 17th, having recovered from an indifferent start to battle back to keep the game alive until the 17th. At home we had mixed results with both John Field & Lenny Murphy and Shemus Dore & Niall Robinson both recording strong wins, finishing on 15th and 13th respectively and our final pairing of Darryl Litton and Mark Walshe were defeated when they came up against an inform pairing on the day from Baltinglass.

Congrats to Baltinglass and well played to all our team and squad members over the course of the competition. On behalf of John Field and myself, I would like to thank all the members who participated in this team effort and hopefully we will have unearthed a few good new players and combinations for future Barton and interclub matches.

'Champions keep playing until they get it right'- roll on next year!!

Irish Mixed Foursomes

Our Irish Mixed Foursomes team come up against the might of Hermitage Golf Club a club with over 800 members who were able to field 3 plus handicappers & a zero handicap man in their team. An intimidating task which our team took on & gave them a real fright.  With a strong away win by John Field & Maria Carvill, our opponents from this major Dublin club proved too strong on the day despite our strong fighting performances. With the final match at Tulfarris all square on 17 with a shot to follow on 18, the key deciding match was won on the 18th with a professional class shot from our opponents onto the green from the fairway bunker setting up the required half in par. Representing Tulfarris on the day were Jerry & Frances Lambe,  Shemus & Lindsay Dore, Mark Walshe & Mags Ryan, John Field & Maria Carvill, Mark Reilly & Rosaleen Prescott.

Many thanks to the team on the day & the entire panel for their effort & support in this major GUI event.

Peter & Mags.

Cullen Cup Trophy

Despite having home advantage we were unsuccessful going down in an extremely close 3-2 loss with the final deciding match lost on the 18th.  The teams performance was typified in particular by the strong ‘never give in’ individual win by John & Mary Curley, winning on the 19th having been 2 down after the 16th. Unfortunately Woodenbridge were too strong on the day.

Tulfarris was represented on the day was : John & Mary Curley, John  Field & Lindsay Dore, Shemus Dore & Catherine Curley, Niall Robinson & Rosaleen Prescott, Mark Walshe & Teresa McGonagle.

Thanks to all involved,

Peter & Mags
