GUI/ILGU Nine-Hole Championship Qualifier & Captains’ Drive In:
Despite natures best efforts to ruin the start of the golfing year, Captain Shemus Dore & Lady Captain Mags Ryan have found an opportunity to hold the ceremonial drive-in. It will coincide with a new event being held this year called the nine hole championship run by the GUI & ILGU.
Tulfarris will hold a singles qualifier for both men and ladies on Wednesday 16th May over our first 9 holes (no entry fee). The winners of each singles event will form a 2 person team who will play in the regional qualifiers between the 11th & 19th June with the winners of each region off on a super trip to Carnoustie, Scotland for the R&A nine hole championship on the 14th July.
So what is happening on the 16th May.
· There is a morning tee time booked up to 1030 on the day. Any lady or gent member may also play at any available tee time during the day. Your card must be signed by a playing partner who is also a member (lady/gent). Please sign in to the computer as this will be a singles qualifying event for handicap purposes.
· The Captains’ Drive in will take place at 1740 at the first tee followed by a shotgun start at 1800 sharp. We have room for 44 players in the evening so it will be first come first served on the BRS booking system. The BRS is now live for the event.
Both Captains hope this is good alternative to the normal drive-in and we will have finger food in the members bar after the evening session. We appreciate it is not ideal having it midweek but hopefully some of you can make it down to mark the occasion.
Bank Holiday Opens:
With the good weather finally upon us this weekend, hopefully many members and guests will take advantage and play our wonderful course. 2 singles events are scheduled – Green Tees Sunday & White Tees on Monday. It is just 10 euro for a member and 20 euro for visitor to enter each event.
Match Play Round-1 Deadline:
The deadline to complete your round one singles and doubles is this Sunday 6th May as per earlier communications. Rules & Conditions around the club matchplays are noted on https://www.tulfarrisgolfclub.com/match-play/
Please remember to send your results by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Tulfarris Golf Club Captains Dinner Private Members Draw:
Due to its success in 2017, the Committee have decided to run the private members’ prize draw again this year. The proceeds from this fundraiser will help us to further support our interclub teams and to put the money raised towards other social occasions we run for members throughout the year. Tickets will be on sale from this weekend at a cost of €5 each.
The prize draw will take place on the night of the Captains Dinner on Saturday 28th July.
The prizes are as follows:
1st Prize €500.
2nd Prize €250.
3rd Prize €100.
There will also be a range of spot prizes on the night. The seller of the winning ticket will also receive a prize of €100.
We would also be grateful if members can take some tickets to sell over the coming weeks and months. Tickets will be available and on sale from members of the Committee on Sunday mornings and during Open Weekends.
Captain’s, President’s Prizes & Golfer of the Year Trophy:
Per club rules, to be eligible to win first prize, a person must have been a member of Tulfarris Golf Club in at least 1 of the 3 preceding years and must have played 3 (number) 18 hole qualifying competitions in the current calendar year. Last weekend’s medal was the first event of the year with qualifier conditions, so hopefully we will now get a good run over the coming weeks and months. Points in the GOY will only be awarded to persons qualifying as per above.
All conditions of play, rules for reference are located on the website https://www.tulfarrisgolfclub.com/conditions-of-play/
Pace of Play:
As we move into the busiest part of the golfing year, please be mindful of your group’s pace of play, it is one of the main problem areas for our sport the world over and impacts the enjoyment levels for all golfers. The committee published a pace of play etiquette document in 2015 and once again we would ask all members to review and adhere to the recommendations. It is attached here for reference and is available on the website: Pace of play
The Golf Club & Resort are partnering this year to host both Junior and Intermediate Scratch Cups on the Saturday & Sunday of the June Bank Holiday Weekend. More details to follow in the coming weeks regarding this exciting event but in the meantime if any member wishes to sponsor either of the perpetual trophies please contact me.
Results of Inter-club matches:
Irish Mixed Foursomes
After and excellent 3-1 win over Lisheen Springs in round 1 on 8th April, Tulfarris went down to a very strong Hermitage side in a closely fought contest on Sunday, Match report from Vice Captain, Peter Pedersen:
Rnd 2, 29th April. Hermitage (A) 3.5 Defeated Tufarris (H) 1.5
Last Sunday saw our Irish Mixed Foursomes team come up against the might of Hermitage Golf Club, a club with over 800 members who were able to field 3 plus handicappers & a zero handicap men in their team. An intimidating task which our team took on & gave them a real fright. With a strong away win by John Field & Maria Carvill, our opponents from this major Dublin club proved too strong on the day despite our strong fighting performances. With the final match at Tulfarris all square on 17 with a shot to follow on 18, the key deciding match was won on the 18th with a professional class shot from our opponents onto the green from the fairway bunker setting up the required half in par. Representing Tulfarris on the day were Jerry & Frances Lambe, Shemus & Lindsay Dore, Mark Walshe & Mags Ryan, John Field & Maria Carvill, Mark Reilly & Rosaleen Prescott.
Many thanks to the team on the day & the entire panel for their effort & support in this major GUI event. We now look forward to the Cullen Cup with a home match against Woodenbridge on May 13th with an even larger strong panel.
Peter & Mags.
Barton Cup vs Slade Valley 15th April
Tulfarris had a great win over Slade Valley in the Barton Cup on the 15th April, Match report from team manager Jerry Lambe:
Tulfarris 3.5 / Slade Valley 1.5
The club recorded a very good win last Sunday against a formidable Slade Valley team, who had high hopes playing against us. In their ranks, and playing in Tulfarris was a former assistant professional golfer , who played in the US. Unfortunately for John Curley and Gavin Buckley they met with this pairing and Slade recorded their only win on the day. Their other half point was a match in which they were dormie 2 down- in effect a win for Tulfarris . This win for Tulfarris was exceptional in that the players Captain Shemus Dore and Niall Robinson, were only drafted into the team late on Sat due to an injury to a team player, which resulted in this partnership unable to play. The other match at home was Stephen Cullen and Lenny Murphy who also recorded a good win on the day.
In recording our win, we took 2 wins away from home, which in itself is remarkable, but when you have a pairing, that had not played together in Slade, it makes it even more remarkable, and not least that the junior member Sean O’ Rourke was unphased by the task, winning their match on the 17th 2 up. Well done to John Field & Sean. Conor Fallon and Fergal Quinn also finished their match 2up, on 18 –helped by a glorious chip in from approx 30 yards on 17th, witnessed by my good self.
So many thanks to all the lads, and to John Field who had to make the late calls on Sat, as I was away.
Upcoming Inter-club matches
Provincial Towns vs Baltinglass at 3pm Saturday 5th May.
Barton Cup vs Baltinglass at 3.30 pm Monday 7th May.
It would be great to have as many members as possible out in support to give the teams that extra edge.
