Newsletter October 3rd 2016

Dear Members,

Some updates as we move into October.

Captain’s Charity:

Captain Kieron would like to say a huge thank you to all the members, friends and businesses for their very generous support and help in making this year's Captains Charity such a great success. On the day, in excess of €5000 was raised for Solas Autism Unit Dunlavin and St. Mary’s Blessington special education fund. A special mention goes to SuperValu who generously sponsored the winning hampers and goody bags and to Mark Howell and the resort for giving us the time-sheet for the day along with sponsoring some of the spot prizes.

A very enjoyable day was had by everyone who attended in what were very tough conditions for golf. The difficulty was reflected in the scoring with the winning score of 86 going to Lenny Murphy, Mark Walshe, Richie Sweetman and Teresa McGonagle.

Winners: L Murphy, M Walshe, R Sweetman and T McGonagle (86 pts on countback)

Runners-Up: P Devereux, R Geoghegan, N Geoghegan, I Sherwood (86 pts)

Third: D Mahon, B Daly, J McCarron, P Murphy (83 pts on countback)

Fourth: S Cullen, M Curran, D Litton, John Hyland (83 pts)

Cullen Cup:

Tulfarris took on tough opposition in Greystones GC in the final of the Cullen Cup held in Baltinglass on Sat 17th September. It was a smashing day for golf and all involved relished the challenge of beating a side that had claimed the national Irish Mixed Foursomes competition convincingly a few weeks earlier. The team threw everything at Greystones including a hole in one by our very own Mags Ryan. The match went down to the wire when at 2-2, the last match was lost on the 17th green.  Of course there was great disappointment on the day but on reflection it was a fun campaign where the whole panel played their part and we took some very large scalps on the journey to the final.

This panel have more to give and having pushed the All-Ireland champions so close, next year we will be targeting going one step further to bring some silverware home.

Many thanks to those who came out to support us, as always it was very much appreciated and it was lovely to see so many friendly supporting faces in the crowd.

Lady Captain Lindsay Dore

Tulfarris Team V Greystones:

Lakeside Challenge:

Tulfarris played Blessington Lakes GC on the 24th September in horrible conditions. The Tulfarris team were represented by Captain Kieron Ryan, Vice-Captain Mark Reilly, Shemus Dore, Eoin Curley, Mark Walshe, Enda Daly, Brian Nolan, Les Broderick, John Devereux, Peter Pedersen, Derek Yeates, Kieron Malone, Philip Dunne and Kevin O’Connor.

Many of the matches were in the balance until the very end but unfortunately we were on the receiving end of a resounding loss and the title has returned to our friends in Blessington Lakes.

Golfer of the Year:

With only the October medal remaining, 3 men are left contending for the coveted title, Chris Shelley, Paul Finnerty & Jerry Lambe. Very best of luck gents.

Birdie King:

We are down to the business end of the competition and with 4 events remaining there is still time to roll in some putts and topple the leaders as below. A hole in one would change the complexion of things!

In Class 1 (H/cap 0-11) Stephen Cullen is leading P Whelan by 45 points on 190 points

In Class 2 (H/cap 12-17) Chris Shelley leads Darren Ash by 10 points on 85 points

In Class 3 (H/cap 18-28) Derek Yeates leads Joe Gardner and Ben Murphy by 15 points on 45 points.
