Newsletter May 19th 2010

Dear Members,

Following last night's monthly Committee Meeting a number of matters will be of interest to you.

GOLF COURSE REPORT

Despite the fact that growing conditions are approximately 4 weeks behind normal the fertilising and maintenance of the Course seems to be having the desired effect. Members will have seen the extensive drainage work with the "slits" now being filled with sand and overseeded. In addition 500 tonnes of sand will be applied to the Course in the near future as top dressing which will ultimately make a significant improvement to the quality of the Golf Course.

MEMBERSHIP

Renewals have now been completed and I am pleased to say that overall Membership numbers have held up well. It will not come as a surprise to you in the current difficult economic climate that a number of members have not renewed but these have been replaced with new members joining.

GUI CARDS/SOCIAL LEVY

The Golfing Union of Ireland have launched a new Member Smart Card. These new cards replace your existing cards. In addition they will be credited with the amount of the Social Levy that you have paid and can be used for the purchase of food, beverage, accommodation, green fees etc in Tulfarris. Their use will also entitle you to a 10% reduction on food and beverage purchases. Your new Card will be available for collection from Norma in the Golf Shop from this coming weekend. Lady Members should bring their existing ILGU cards to Norma and she will credit their levy amounts.

Incidentally, in order to encourage you to register your new Card with golfnet.ie the GUI is offering prizes for those who do so before 31 May 2010. Instructions on this are included with your new card and are also posted in the Golf Shop.

GUI HANDICAPS

The Handicap Secretary, Phelim Dolan, has asked me to remind Members about the importance of retaining "your" handicap. This matter has been dealt with by a notice on the Tulfarris website for a number of years. In essence it says that in order to retain your handicap in any season it is necessary to return a minimum of 3 qualifying scores in the preceeding year. Failure to do so will result in your handicap being "starred" which will compel players to produce 3 cards for the purpose of re-instating your handicap. A player whose handicap is "starred" is ineligible to win any prizes while so "starred". If you have any queries in this regard please email Phelim at pdolan71@gmail.com.

OPEN COMPETITIONS

The June Bank Holiday Opens take place on Sunday 6 and Monday 7 June. These fourball betterball events are an excellent opportunity to showcase your Course to your friends and we would encourage as many as possible to participate. The entry fees are €10 and €25 for members and visitors respectively. Similarly, the Semi Open Competition on Wednesday 16 June is another such opportunity with fees of €10 and €20. Time sheets are available in the Golf Shop.

WEDNESDAY SCRAMBLES

These sociable Club competitions will start on Wednesday 2 June and will run through the summer (except on Wednesdays of Semi Opens) so we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. These 2 person (any combination) 9 hole scrambles tee off between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. and are followed by the presentation of prizes in the Hotel bar afterwards. Entry fee is being maintained at the princely sum of €2 per person. I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday evenings.

CLUB MATCHPLAYS

The Club singles and doubles matchplay competitions are underway and Members are reminded to have their first round matches completed by the deadline of 1 June.

INTERCLUB COMPETITIONS

This is a busy weekend on the Interclub front with Tulfarris participating in the Pierce Purcell Regional Qualifier at Roundwood Golf Club at 12 noon on Saturday 22 May. Team Manager Mick Curran is confident that the Club will get through to the Regional Semi Finals and Final which will be played on the following day Sunday 23rd.

Barton Cup Team Manager, Pearse Daly and his team play their 3rd round match against Blessington Lakes at 4.00 p.m. on Sunday 23rd on a Home and Away basis. This has all the ingredients of a "local derby" and bragging rights will be up for grabs!

Both teams would welcome any and all support from Club Members over the weekend. Good luck to all involved.

Regards in golf,

John Horan,

Hon Secretary
