Newsletter March 30th 2010

Dear Members,

Pierce Purcell Shield:

The team manager for the Pierce Purcell Shield interclub competition in 2010 is Mick Curran. He is keen to continue the Club's strong showing in this event and is assembling the strongest possible panel from those who have signalled their willingness to participate. Regrettably, some team members from previous campaigns are unavoidably not available for this year's qualifying date of Saturday 22 May.

Accordingly, Mick has asked me to let the members know that he is in the market to sign up a small number of additional members to the panel. The competition is played by teams from each club consisting of ten members and play will be by foursomes medal play on the qualifying day and foursomes match play in the subsequent rounds (for which we will undoubtedly qualify!). In order to be eligible to compete players must have had a handicap which was not less than 12 during calendar year 2009. The combined lowest playing handicap of each pair during 2009 shall have been not less than 27. Ideal combinations would therefore be 12/15, 13/14, or thereabouts. Players must be over 18 years of age on 1 January 2010.

So if you were in the 12 to 16 handicap range in 2009 and are interested in being considered for selection please contact Mick Curran on 087-6671401.

Barton Shield

Tulfarris' first round outing in this competition is against Milltown at 2.00 p.m. on Friday 9 April with home and away matches. Team Manager, Pearse Daly would welcome any and all support which Club members would like to give at either venue on the day. Good luck to all involved.

Pin Positions

For those of you who played on Sunday last and had to "endure" rather than "enjoy" some unusual pin positions on some greens I have been asked to assure you that this was a one-off abberation which resulted from some mis-communication. Clearly, there are differing interpretations of the term "difficult". We have been assured that there will not be a recurrence of this problem.

Easter Opens

There are still lines available for the Easter Weekend Open Competitions on Sunday and Monday 4 and 5 April. The format will be fourball betterball and the entry fee is €10 for a member and €25 for a visitor. This is a good opportunity to show off your course to your golfing friends. Timesheets are available at 045 867609.

Weekend Competitions

As mentioned previously we intend to introduce "weekend" competitions on a trial basis starting from Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 April. This should facilitate those members who might prefer to play on Saturday mornings and should free up some spaces on the Sunday timesheet. Facilities for payment of your entry fee into the new Club Safe will be available on the day and instructions will be posted on how to proceed. Golfer of the Year (GOY) events will continue to be played on Sundays only.

Annual Subscriptions/Levies

You should by now have received your invoice from the Receiver so just a gentle reminder that your annual subscriptions and levies are due for payment.

Happy Easter

From a snow covered Blessington I wish you all a Happy Easter and a quick change to some better golfing weather in the days and weeks ahead.

John Horan,

Hon Secretary
