Dear Members,

Barton Shield

Course Superintendent David Brady and his team had the course at Tulfarris looking its very best on Friday evening - all set for the prestigious GUI Barton Shield on Saturday morning.

Unfortunately due to the torrential downpour overnight Tulfarris, like a number of other Regional Qualifying locations, was unplayable early on Saturday and the qualifiers had to be postponed. It is proving difficult to find suitable alternative dates for the 12 Clubs involved so no new arrangements can be announced as yet.

Cullen Trophy

Tulfarris played in the first round of this competition on Saturday afternoon and the Captain Les Broderick has sent me the following report.

"Our Cullen Trophy campaign got off to a great start in Charlesland.

The mixed foursomes team was:

Niall Robinson and Maria Carvill, Jerry and Frances Lambe, John and Mary Curley, Dara and Rosemary Kennedy and Shemus and Lindsay Dore.

In spite of playing a Charleslandteam that certainly looked strong on paper, the Tulfarris players put in a forceful performance, with Charlesland only winning 1 match.

The last match was called in on the 15th. green whilst we were 1 up.

The Charlesland manager complimented me on my risky strategy of playing all married couples, which showed great harmony in the pairs.

I hope that will still be the case by the end of the campaign".

South Leinster Trophy

This afternoon Tulfarris played Borris in the second outing in this competition. The Tulfarris team of seven players was (Home) Captain Les Broderick, Darren Ash, Pat Mahon and Brian Sweeney. Away we had:

John Devereux, Frank Lewis and Noel Kelly.

Weather condidtions were not great in Tulfarris but were atrocious in Borris and all matches were called in there after 13 holes - to see if the weather and course conditions would improve sufficiently to allow the matches to be completed.

While that was going on the Home team went on to win 3 of the 4 home matches, leaving Pat Mahon in an all out "battle" with his Borris opponent. Pat, calmly - or so it seemed to us onlookers - parred 16,

17 and 18 to win the fourth match for Tulfarris making the Borris situation irrelevant. Well done Pat and also well done to all the players and to Team Managers John Britton in Borris and Tom O'Shea in Tulfarris.

Open Weekend

Next weekend we have a 2 person Scramble on Sunday 1 June and 18 hole Singles on Monday 2 June. The timesheets are now open for these Open competitions.

Ladies Challenge Cup

Best of luck to the Ladies Club in their second round Challenge Cup match against Tramore in Borris GC on Tuesday 3 June.

Summer Social Scrambles

The first of our Wednesday evening 2 Person Social Scrambles takes place from 5 to 6p.m. on the 4th of June. If you have a partner just turn up on the evening and if you don't come along anyway and we will do the best we can to "pair" you up. Each evening we will play over 9 holes and the presentation of prizes will take place in the Hotel Bar immediatly after the golf.

Junior Cup

Finally best wishes to Team Manager James McCarron and his panel of players for their first outing in the Junior Cup in Wicklow on the morning of Saturday 7 June.

Regards, John Horan
