This afternoon the Tulfarris Ladies Club took on Castle Bearna in the Mid-Leinster Final of the ILGU Challenge Cup at Rosslare G C.
This was the culmination of a campaign which started out with more than 50 Clubs taking part. Tulfarris had their first win over Woodenbridge (played in Wicklow) and they achieved further wins over Tramore (in Borris), Wexford (in Coollattin) and then Courtown in the Semi-Final (in Blainroe).
The team was Lady Captain Maria Carvill, Rosemary Kennedy, Ita McCarron, Mary Curley and Ann Horan. They were assisted by caddies Niall Robinson, Frances Lambe, Tom O'Shea, John Curley and John Horan.
Links golf is a different proposition to the parkland variety most of us are used to playing. While it was obviously a tough challenge for both teams it meant that much came down to a bounce of a ball here and there. One match went down the 19th and was won by Tulfarris, another was won on the 17th but two others were lost at a similar stage leaving one match still alive and it also went down the 19th.
Unfortunately Castle Bearna got the 'bounce' on this one and the match ended 3 to 2 in their favour.
Speaking immediately afterwards Lady Captain Maria thanked the team, the caddies, other panel members (Catherine Hayes who 'managed' the team today - Lindsay Maguire also managed previously - and Denise Sexton), the Captain and Committee of the Men's Club, the supporters who travelled to Rosslare and the many others who sent good wishes to the team. She also paid tribute to Pro Tom O'Neill for his coaching of team members.
She - and we all - thank the ILGU and host club Rosslare for all their courtesies and finally congratulate Castle Bearna on their win. Well done to them.
Well done also to our own Ladies - a massive achievement for a relatively small club.
