Quarter Final

Tulfarris defeated Wicklow 5.5 - 3.5

Update from team manager Denis Mahon:

Tulfarris was once again looking its glorious best for the Provincial Towns quarter final against Wicklow last Sunday. The weather didn't disappoint and neither did the golf.  All of the Tulfarris team played their part; some came up against players in very hot form, covering most of the course in under par.  With the first four matches shared, the final crucial game came down to the wire with Tom O’Rourke pulling out all the stops to win a dramatic match on the 19th. It was a great team effort by everyone on the day.

Away from home we faced a team that won their final in 2016 9-0 at home so we knew what to expect and to claim 2.5 pts (It was looking like 3 but one match was called in) from a possible 4 was unheard of there, some of the new players on the team produced the goods on the day which lead to an overall result of 5.5 / 3.5 and we now face into a semi-final against 2017 winners Enniscorthy GC on Sunday 15TH July with 5 matches away and 4 at home.

Our team on the day was as follows but I would also like to acknowledge the assistance received from Paul Fitzpatrick who looked after affairs at home as Tom was ‘’doing his thing’’ on the course and also John Field, Pat Curley, John Curley, Jerry Lambe,Captain Shemus Dore,& Enda Daly for caddying on the day.

Thank you all for your support and hopefully we see all our members out supporting the team again in the semi-final on 15th July

Round 3: May 25  Tulfarris 5 defeated Athy 4

Following on from our superb win over near neighbours Baltinglass we were drawn to face Athy who had already recorded good wins in previous rounds over Carlow & The Heritage. Again we were on the wrong side of the draw with 5 matches away and 4 at home and after numerous practice sessions down in Athy we decided to make a couple of changes from our last win. The wind on the day made conditions very tricky and away from home we lost out in one match on the 18th and another 2 matches on the 17th with Paul Murphy gaining an important win on the 18th.

At home some of our matches went behind but the lads showed gritted determination to claw their way back from 2 & 3 down early to eventually win on the 17th & 18threspectively. Our first match out had a commanding lead at one stage but Athy showed character to hit back with a couple of birdies to bring it up the 18th but we eventually claimed the win.

This all lead to the nail biting finish with the last match featuring Sean O’Rourke playing in his first Inter club singles match for the club one down playing the 17th but he showed great resolve to level the match and when the 18th was halved we headed down the 19th. Sean after finding the bunker with his drive showed great composure to lay up to his ‘’preferred yardage’’ which put all the pressure back on the opposition and after hitting the lip out of the bunker they found water with their 3rd shot, Sean had to finish the job and he duly did so by hitting the middle of the green and 2 putting to seal a hard fought win for the team.

In the quarter final we will play the winners of Blainroe GC and Wicklow GC.

Many thanks to the entire panel for their time and patience as we had to rearrange this match at a late stage and playing on a Friday wasn’t ideal.

Also many thanks to Brendan Daly & John Field for their assistance with practice and caddying duties over the two matches and Tom O’Neill for his valued opinions.

Round 2May 8   Tulfarris GC 7  defeated Baltinglass GC 2

After receiving a bye through to the 2nd round of this year’s competition we were drawn to play local rivals Baltinglass GC on Saturday 5th May.

Following a trial match against Naas GC where we had a large turnout of approx 20 members playing on the day we eventually agreed on a team of 9 players which in itself was a very difficult choice with the level of interest received.

At home on Saturday we got off to a great start in 3 of the 4 matches establishing substantial early leads which our lads duly extended and won handsomely. The final match was ‘’nip and tuck’’ all the way and was still very much alive when called in on the 18th hole.

Over in Baltinglass GC it was the opposite as early on we were down one hole in 4 of the 5 matches but gradually the guys got to grips with the tricky greens and proceeded to turn most of the matches around which resulted in Tulfarris claiming 3.5 pts out of the 5 available away from home.

Our next match will again be an away draw this time against Athy GC and hopefully the date will be set later this week.

Team on the day was as follows,

Home: Paddy Carty, Lenny Murphy, Paul Reid, & Eoin Curley

Away: James McCarron, Paul Murphy, Pearse Daly, Paul Finnerty, Gavin Buckley.

Special thanks to Tom O’Rourke for all his assistance and also the entire panel for their commitment.

Also special mention to Brendan Daly & John Field for their help with practice and caddying...

Kind regards,

Denis

Round 2:  Tulfarris 6 defeated Blessington Lakes 1

In the second round match as per last year we drawn against Baltinglass and had to concede home advantage. A Tremendous effort was put into practicing away which duly paid off when we won 3 of the 5 away matches and as always we were strong at home winning 2 of the 4 matches with the final math called in when 1 up on the 18th tee.

Team  on the day was Paddy Carthy, Niall Robinson, James McCarron, Gavin Buckley, Paul Finnerty, Paul Murphy, Myles Burke, Paul Reid & Lenny Murphy.

Round 1:  April 9:  Provincial Towns team successful in Rnd 1 with a  6.0-3.0 victory over a strong Blessington Lakes team who were confident of success.  With 2 of the away 4 matches and 4 of the 5 homes match won we were also in leading in the final match when called in.

Rnd 2:

Tulfarris have progressed to the last 16 of the Provincial Towns Cup by beating Baltinglass 6/3. The first three home matches all finished with Tulfarris winning on the 14th green. The remaining two matches were then called in, as we had secured two wins out of four away from home.

The Irish golfing legend Christy O'Connor Snr passed away but the void was very quickly filled by Myles "Himself" Burke. Due to a management error by me, spotted by our eagle eyed professional Tom O'Neill, the team was a player short with two and a half hours to tee time. Having just finished 18 holes in Tulfarris, "Himself" put on the jersey when called upon and headed to do battle with our Old Foes. Despite being 3 down after 10 holes, "Himself" secured his win on his 36th hole of the day which in turn secured the overall win for Tulfarris.

There were great performances from all players on the day. The team was:

Home; Paddy Carthy, Niall Robinson, Pierce Daly, Jay Curley and Mark Walshe. Manager Pat Curley.

Away; Jerry Lambe, Lenny Murphy, Enda Daly and Myles Burke. Manager James McCarron

Round 1:  Mt Wolesely defeated Tulfarris 5-2

Played in tough windy conditions Tulfarris had five players away and four at home and lost five matches and won two with the remaining two called in at that point. Some of the matches that were lost went all the way to the 18th greens in
Tulfarris and Mount Wolseley. So overall a close enough result in the end.

Tulfarris was represented by James McCarron, Myles Burke, Barry McCluskey,
Jerry Lambe, John Curley, Alan Britton, Eoin Curley, Pearse Daly and Niall Robinson.

The team was:

In Tulfarris 2 matches won 8/7; 1 match won 7/6; 1 called in
In Newbridge 1 match lost on 19th, 2 on 17th, 1 on 16th, 1 on 15th.

4 players making their Tulfarris interclub debuts- Eoin Curley, Kieron Ryan, Seamus Mc Grath, Ronnie Carroll.
Key match was Ronnie Carroll's. He was 1 down after 16 - won 17 with a birdie. On 18 both putting for birdies Newbridge from c20ft - left 4ft beyond hole. Ronnie 10 ft putt which hit hole but did'nt drop. Hole halved. Ronnie lost 1st sudden death hole to a solid par.

Overall, I believe it was a very solid performance which may have been very different with a bit of luck or on another day same performance could have got us over the line.Overall, I was very happy with the team effort against a team who won this event in 2008."
